Easing Your Menopause Anxiety
Good news and bad news… anxiety tends to be more common during perimenopause (at its worst then) and menopause, but will taper off after menopause is completed. During perimenopause and menopause many women feel the sting of depression and have high stress levels. Lack of estrogen produces depression and that produces anxiety.
Interesting note: Research shows that progesterone, which also depletes during menopause, has a calming and relaxing effect on the body. Lack of hormones we once had in abundance means emotions we once overlooked that produced minor anxiety, can now be blown out of proportion.
Getting in Touch with Your Body
Don’t just shrug you shoulders and continue on like there is nothing wrong. If you are having physical symptoms (trembling, shaking, fast heartbeat) that incapacitate you or seriously interfere with your daily life, see your doctor. This is a very real problem.
And so are the other symptoms that come with a panic attack – breathlessness, tight or full feeling in the chest and/or throat, profuse sweating, or cold and clammy hands, muscle tension and/or soreness, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, constant worry and feeling sad, lack of concentration, irritability and restless sleep.
Anxiety is not something you should ignore or it often compounds the problem. It does not just go away overnight and you can’t just “talk” yourself out of it. Take care of yourself by eating well, relaxing and tell others about the way you feel. Don’t be concerned about the odd few people who will equate anxiety with you losing your marbles – it’s their problem!
Easy Menopause Tips
Eat well and above all else avoid crash diets, skipping meals and eating before bed. Stay well hydrated, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, and steer clear of high fat, processed foods. Be good to your body and it will be good to you.
Take care of yourself and exercise by taking Yoga, Tai Chi, walking, swimming, jogging or playing sports. These increase your energy levels, clear your mind, boost your metabolism, strengthen your body and improve circulation. Learn how to relax.
Relaxing seems to be a skill we have lost in this hectic day and age. While you are eating properly, exercising and taking time for yourself, spend some time contemplating what stressors you have in your life. Those triggers may be something you can get rid of to reduce your level of anxiety.
