Rapid Prototyping. General Info To Be Aware Of

Published under Science by writer.

Rapid prototyping technology has several names used among rapid prototyping specialists. Those names are: 3D modeling and solid freeform fabrication (SFF). The history of rapid prototyping dates back to the beginning of 80’s. This period was characterized by the transition from manual production of rapid prototyping models to machine production. The production was carried out with the help of the computer-aided design, or CAD, and all rapid prototyping machines were accompanied by this function. Among these machines were different kinds of plotters like drum plotter, XY plotter, pen type plotters, etc. The machines with computer-aided design function were capable of shape models from different materials like wood or foam, by means of layer-by-layer technology. The objects produced by CAD tables could reach up to 48×48 inches with a depth of 4 inches as a maximum. However, the object could just one sided and if you wanted to have more detailed you had to combine two of such objects to get a full-fledged rapid prototyping model.

Another important component of the rapid prototyping technology was created almost in the same time. It was called STL or stereo-lithography system. Supposedly, the STL system was invented by Xerox laboratories in the middle 80s of 20th century. The group of Xerox engineers was trying to devise the way to colliquate toner into firmer material. Xerox labs were famous for very inventive intellects. These intellects decided to put a print head assembly together with laser inside of a photocopying device. It was understandable that invented idea could bring the inventors money so they decided to put the idea into practice. This way the new device called laser printer came in the market.

Rapid prototyping technology experienced a real technological boom in the end of 80’s of 20th century. A team of engineers headed by Scott Crump invented a process that was given a name of fused deposition modeling. The process was finished by creation of the first Rapid Prototyping machine. As well as in the past, the modern essence of RP process is the creation of the real prototyping model of any object from 3D model created by means of a special computer program.

Presently not a single industry can do without rapid prototyping technology. This process makes it possible to spare money by revealing all disadvantages of the future product before its mass production. Several models are created; each of them reveals new minuses, which must be removed, making a model perfect. If disadvantages found during the modeling stage would be revealed when a product would be released to market, it would cost a manufacturer a pretty penny.

Therefore, the main aim of the rapid prototyping technology is to improve the quality of a product on the early stages.

Over the recent decades rapid prototype services managed with solving lots of tech problems. And rapid prototype might help you to. Please make sure to find out more about the rapid prototype industry and how it helps.
