Allergy Testing your Doctor Recommends

Your doctor may recommend a variety of allergy testing to diagnose your condition if you suspect you may have an allergy, but are uncertain as to the allergen causing your malady.

A variety of allergens can be identified using these various tests. Since some tests will work better than others; it is a good idea to be familiar with the different methods of allergy testing available to you. Basically, the tests can fall into three categories: Scratch tests, elimination tests, and blood tests.

Scratch Tests

The scratch tests are the most common of the allergy tests that are done. This test consists of placing a small amount of the suspected allergen onto the surface of the patient’s skin, and then making a scratch or prick to allow the substance to penetrate the skin. The site is then observed closely for indication of an allergic reaction.

Swelling, redness, or itching are signs that an allergic reaction has occurred. A result can often be detected in as little as twenty minutes using this type of testing. The other advantage to this kind of test is that many different allergens can be tested together. This makes this method especially useful if the allergen is unknown, airborne, or a food allergy.

Elimination Diets

If a food allergy is suspected, the elimination diet may be performed. A variety of foods that are potential allergens are eliminated form the diet for several weeks. Each food is then gradually added back to the person’s diet, with attention being mad to see which of the selections of food is causing the allergy symptoms to return.

This method of allergy testing works best with mild allergic reactions. However, it can pose a potential danger to patients who have severe, anaphylactic allergies. If there is a severe allergy suspected, a third method of allergy testing is preferred to ensure the safety of the patient. Thus, a life-threatening substance is not placed into the system of the allergy sufferer.

Blood Tests

The last type of allergy testing is the blood test, commonly called the RAST test. This is performed in the laboratory and uses blood that has been drawn for the patient. The blood is examined for presence of immunoglobulin antibodies. These will indicate if the body is producing an allergic reaction. Elevated levels of IGE’s can tell your doctor if you are allergic to certain types of allergens. This method is not always accurate or precise as are the other methods. Should your doctor decide to have allergy testing done, he will examine your family medical history and tell you when to stop your medications.

It is not fun to have an allergic reaction. You may suffer with sneezing, coughing, weeping, or even swelling, in some cases. Some people experience migraines because of their allergies while others may go into shock, in extreme cases.

Every allergy is unique and should be treated differently. Not all medications are the same, nor do they help the same on each person. That is why it is best to talk with your doctor so that you may find the best medicine appropriate for you.

How Do They Test for Allergies?

When you go to your allergist to be tested, she will test you with various substances. This way she will be able to determine exactly what your specific allergy might be.

You may be tested by anything from dairy products to types of grasses to dust and dander. What your allergist is searching for is a certain reaction.

If you are allergic to the substance he has injected into your skin, your skin will become raised and red, this is sign of a positive reaction. This process is used by your allergist to determine exactly the allergy you have, and how to now go about prescribing the proper drug for you.

If allergic to the substance you have been injected with, your skin will become red and raised. This is a sure sign you are having a reaction. That is how your allergist determines what allergy you have and how to treat your particular malady.

When having an allergy, depending on the severity, you need to find the medicine that will work best for you. If your allergy is mild, perhaps, an over the counter allergy medication will work well for you.

If your allergy is mild, then an over the counter medicine may be just the thing for you. For the more severe allergies, over the counter medicines may not work for you. If you have a severe allergy, say for instance, bee stings; then you may require a prescription medicine prescribed from your doctor and carried with you at all times.

If you are allergic to something and you would like to at least rid yourself of some of the symptoms, get tested today. Ask your allergist if there is a medication he would recommend that would help you feel better again. There are many medicines on the market that will help with your symptoms. Allergies can be very painful for millions of people. As they live with debilitating allergies, their quality of life is affected by symptoms that accompany these allergies. Some of the symptoms that can be caused by these allergies include: sinusitis, skin disorders, gastro-intestinal upset and chronic ear infections.

Finding treatments for these allergies that are effective can be a tremendous struggle. Many therapies are only for short -term.

Finding effective treatments for these maladies can be rather worrisome. Many of the therapies for allergies only work for a short period of time.

Allergy Shots, How is it that they work?

Allergy Shots: How Exactly Do They Work?

In turn, this causes the symptoms to be less severe as well. Relief will begin to occur with time and will become longer lasting.

The most common reason a person takes allergy shots is to have relief from pollen allergies. These can be found in hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Some have said that asthma can also be improved by using allergy shots.

These shots should only be considered as a last means, when other treatments have failed to help.

If someone is suffering from severe asthma or heart disease, then allergy shots are not recommended for them. Also children under five should not receive them either. If pregnant, it is not know how the shots would effect the unborn child. If you are already on shots, you must consult your doctor before you continue them. If it is recommended that you take allergy shots, you will have to have a allergy test, skin test, and blood test as well. Most shots are started by going twice a week and then after six months, one can begin maintenance of once a month. The decision about allergy shots should be discussed with you and your doctor. Life can be easier through better medicine. Maybe allergy shots are what are right for you.

Allergy Symptoms - Treat and Understand!

Chemicals, foods, environmental products, flowers and grasses are all items that may be the very causes of allergies in today’s society. You seldom meet anyone who is without allergies.

Being aware of your allergy symptoms and knowing how to treat the underlying causes creating them are two necessary components of finding an effective solution to increased health and wellness.

People treat allergy symptoms in various ways, however; these treatments are oftentimes short-lived, and only provide a band-aid approach to the problem. They don’t provide long -term relief. With more patience and knowledge, one can soon overcome otherwise debilitating allergies and have more long-term relief. This would definitely be a welcomed result for all.

What Are The Common Allergy Symptoms?

Throughout the world, common allergy symptoms are seen daily in doctor’s offices. Chronic sinusitis is the most frequent sign of an allergy. This is evident by the nasal passages being continually clogged and/or draining, and headaches. Having red, itchy, watery eyes can be another very common allergy symptom which not only can be painfully irritating, but which only worsens by scratching a great deal.

A variety of over-the-counter and prescription medications are available to help stop these reactions and inflammation. Eye drops are often used to take the redness and irritation away from the eyes.

Natural approaches are also an option to use with allergy symptoms as well. A variety of herbs can be most affective when dealing with allergies, an example of one herb that is used for allergies is milk thistle which can cleanse the liver and help it function properly.

More delayed-type of reactions occur with other allergy symptoms. With these types of symptoms, it can be weeks before a reaction occurs. These types of allergies are most difficult to diagnose and can create problems for the sufferer for years to come. These symptoms can include: irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, or diarrhea. These are often caused by certain foods that the body is reacting against and need eliminated from the diet.

Allergy symptoms to certain chemicals or food additives can be equated to mental problems such as attention deficit and depression. By using dietary intervention or acupuncture, the root causes of these allergy symptoms may be found. This is helpful in providing long-term relief. There is not always a “quick-fix” answer to allergy symptoms, the underlying cause has to be discovered and then dealt with no matter how long. This eventually leads to better health for a longer period of time, at last!

No matter what they are, allergies can oftentimes make life unbearable. If the point of your allergy is something you come in contact with daily, this can be especially true. If it is the pollen in the air, a certain house plant, or the trees in your front yard; it can make you never want to be outside your house again.

While some people are allergic to the foods they eat, others may be allergic to their deodorant. No matter what your allergy may be, it should bring you much comfort to know that there is a group whose purpose is to make your life more comfortable.

No matter what the source of your allergy, you may be happier now that there is an allergy research group in place to make your life easier and more comfortable. This group specializes in showing you how to live with your allergies without suffering the bad reactions that you had previously.

What Does an Allergy Research Group Do?

An allergy research group approaches all types of allergies in a different method. They make certain of the origin of the allergy and then find ways to help the person live with the allergy normally. Thus, the suffering and pain are no longer a part of the person’s daily life.

This group will test people who have allergies. They will then determine the severity of the reactions the people are having. These tests will allow them to see if they can pinpoint the exact culprits people are allergic to, and then begin a regime to help. Medications, supplements, or other products will then be given to help alleviate the allergic symptoms completely.

You may begin to think the best thing for you is to remain inside your house forever, never going outside. You are simply fed up with being allergic to the most common of things.

Why not volunteer to help the group? They like having people to join them as volunteers and become an essential part of the experimentation process. That way you learn first hand of your allergies and products that are out there to eliminate your pain and suffering completely.

Don’t wait! Contact the allergy research group close to you. They are there to help you gain more knowledge about your allergy, offer some advice, and hopefully a solution to your dilemma. You want to be living a better quality of life? Help is here, just ask.

Allergies and Deodorant: What Is The Stink?

Published under Health by Dorothy Medlum. No Comments .

People use deodorant so they will not have body odor. People don’t like to be smelly. But what happens if what they are using is something they are actually allergic to?

The deodorant user may experience bumps, or red rash, or a burning sensation due to their deodorant. If this happens, it does not automatically mean that they are allergic to their deodorant.

The cause of the reaction may be something simple, such as; the deodorant is too strong for their body. They may need a milder form of the deodorant. It can also be a reaction to the washing powder they are doing their clothes in; it may not be related to their deodorant at all.

This does not mean that you will have to stop using your deodorant altogether. It simply means you need to watch it carefully and stop using it for awhile to be sure. If you are wanting to be sure that the signs you have experienced are to your deodorant, you may have to seek the help of your allergist.

If you have tried several other brands, and the reactions to deodorant are still occurring, you may have to stop using deodorant completely.

You may decide to try some talc or some baby powder. Both will leave you fresh, and make you smell much nicer after a sporting event. Just place some powder or talc under your arms and it will also help eliminate the amount of perspiration that you are having.

This may not be as effective as the deodorant was, but it will not cause you the same reaction as the deodorant. Therefore, you smell better, without the problems the deodorant created.

If you still are not sure whether you have an allergy to your deodorant or not, you may want to see an allergist. He can determine if it is indeed your deodorant or maybe the soap you are washing your clothes in. Having an allergy to your deodorant is not the end of the world, you have other alternatives to staying fresh all day long. So, don’t sweat the small stuff!

Allergy Drops: Say Goodbye To Shots

Published under Health by Dorothy Medlum. No Comments .

by Dorothy Medlum

If you suffer from allergies, it is no pleasure to receive your shots every week; it can be rather painful. Today, there are alternative methods of treatment. One such method is the usage of allergy drops to treat patients who suffer from allergies.

The sublingual allergy drops are taken at home by the patient and have shown similar benefits to the weekly injections.

Allergy shots are composed of diluted versions of allergen which the patient reacts to. This is usually a ration of about 100,000 to one. In many cases, the ear, nose and throat allergists use a dilution of about a million to one.

The allergens are injected into patients who then wait about a half-hour to be sure there is no detrimental reaction to the injection. Then, they are allowed to leave the doctor’s office.

Those who have a health insurance that covers the cost of the injections still are required to pay a co-payment which adds up quickly when you have weekly visits. In addition to the costs, the time spent going to the doctor also adds up for the patient.

With the usage of the allergy drops, the patient only sees his doctor about two or three times a year to receive the prescription for the drops. Most insurance plans will cover the cost of the drops. And, the patient’s co-pays costs are reduced to number of visits to the doctor’s office.

No longer does the patient have to make those weekly visits to the doctor. And all the patient is required to do is place the drops under the tongue once a week as directed.

Most children will happily opt for the drops and it has been shown more people would rather take the drops on a regular basis as opposed to going for their weekly injections.
