What Causes Acid Reflux Disease?

Put simply, the problem begins with the over consumption of highly acidic foods. Then, esophageal muscles can also be responsible because they play an essential role in digestion and transporting food from your mouth to your stomach and then to the intestines.

Muscles assist food as it travels through the body. Entrance to the food pipe, arrival to the stomach and exit from the stomach is all controlled by valves which function by stimulating the entry, exit, and backflow of food that is being digested. The muscle which principally controls backflow from the stomach back into the esophagus is the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES.

Sometimes, due to weakening of these various muscles, food stays longer in the stomach. Malfunctioning valves, also manage to allow food into areas where it should not go, such as backward from the stomach into the food pipe. Of course, this backflow contains food, digested by stomach acids, and that’s why we get the sour warm sensation in our throats. In addition, sometimes, this acid is harmful to the walls of our food pipe, which end up getting scarred.

Backflow of food also relates the obstructed feeling that many sufferers of acid reflux complain of. Breathing problems can also arise since muscles may have become disobedient or weak and the digestive process may have become irregular, especially in the stomach and chest.

Although many people believe it is so, eating acidic foods will not make any part of your body more acidic. The stomach naturally produces hydrochloric acid during regular digestion and it is this acid reentering the esophagus that results in acid reflux.

Individuals who suffer from acid reflux will want to stay away from spearmint, peppermint, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. Fatty or processed foods and unhealthy fast foods should be avoided in an effort to alleviate symptoms of acid reflux. Carbonated drinks can also worsen symptoms and should therefore not be consumed.

The old adage is true; you are indeed what you eat. The key is keeping your body balanced between being overly acidic or alkaline. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, multigrain foods, white meat, and poultry will help you do so. Remember that acidic fruits and vegetables like grapefruit, oranges, and tomatoes still should be avoided. And you will want any meat you eat to be cooked in a way that keeps its fat content low.

You can keep from experiencing the unpleasant symptoms of acid reflux disease by reducing stress, getting lots of sleep, exercising regularly, and trying to maintain a healthy weight.

Natural And Alternative Ways To Deal With Acid Reflux

There are several medications that can help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux but can make the problem worse if you stop taking them. These medications are called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), and work by minimizing the acid production in your stomach.

If you stop taking these medications, the body responds by bouncing back and producing even more acid. This process is known as rebound hypersecretion. For this reason, it’s not a good idea to suddenly stop taking PPI’s if you are currently using them.

There are several herbs that are often used as heartburn remedies. Tea made from caraway seeds, chamomile, coriander, fennel, anise, and angelica can offer relief after a meal. Spearmint and peppermint teas are also known to help. You can also get capsules containing caraway seed and peppermint oils, which some people also get good results from.

Roots and herbs are also used by some alternative treatment specialist. Ginger root is one of the herbs used in Ayurveda, and it can help reduce acid reflux when taken regularly.

Eating enough fiber can also help reduce the symptoms. Fiber helps your body to digest the acid in the foods as well as keeping you regular. If you don’t like eating foods containing fiber, there are pills and powders you mix with water available.

Nicotine is another contributor to acid reflux, so if you smoke stopping can help. It causes the esophageal sphincter to relax, which can allow fluids and acid to “swish around” more freely. Plus, stress can sometimes be related to smoking which can also affect your digestion.

You should avoid raw onions, citrus fruits, ice cream, spicy foods, coffee, tea, cheese, potatoes, ground beef and spaghetti as well.

Licorice, (sold in health food stores), Meadowsweet, (an excellent anti-inflammatory and antacid that works to protect membranes in the digestive tract), certain digestive enzymes, such as Papain (helps to digest food better and faster, and keeps it from sitting around in the stomach for long periods), Chamomile (works for all digestive problems), and even marshmallow (works as anti-inflammatory, together with chamomile), all have had success as alternative medications over a period of time.

In the end, a good diet, positive changes in your lifestyle, weight control and lowering your stress level will all help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux.

The Link Between Acid Reflux And Voice Disorders

Sometimes when a person is suffering from acid reflux, they may experience symptoms that may appear at first to be a cold or flu. People develop a cough, their throat may feel sore, and they may lose their voice altogether. When a person has a cold, these symptoms may last for a few days, but will disappear.

But if they continue beyond a few days, they could be a sign of an acid reflux problem. Voice loss is one symptom, along with sore stomach, headaches and heartburn. If left untreated, these symptoms can worsen and acid reflux can lead to other problems as well.

A sore throat is one symptom of reflux that occurs because the stomach acid leaves the stomach and moves into the lungs and/or the esophagus. This acid can mix with saliva, leading to a sore throat and possibly the loss of the person’s voice.

Another link between acid reflux and voice disorders is a shortness of breath due to the acid. This can limit the air necessary to speak, and lead to strained vocal chords. Over time they can become damaged, affecting the voice. It can either become thin and reedy or in some cases it will deepen.

Acid reflux can hurt not only a persons throat and vocal chords; it can also hurt a persons lungs and other organs including the heart. There are many ways to help a person who is suffering from acid reflux. A person will have to change their diet in order to stop the effects of acid reflux.

Avoiding acidic foods, such as certain fruits is a good step. It’s also important to avoid alcohol as it leads to increased acid production.

The vocal chords will need to be looked by a doctor who may have to perform surgery because sometimes when vocal chords are damaged, growth can occur. Tiny polyps may form which can make the voice scratchy and hurt when one speaks. Only a doctor will be able to diagnose this problem. If ones vocal chords hurt for more than a few days, it is important to see a doctor so that they can find a solution to the problem before it gets worse. Sometimes if a person waits too long, surgery will not be able to be performed because the added damage surgery might cause.

Acid reflux is a common disorder that can be helped, though not cured. Medications and diet will make a difference. A persons voice may be affected so it is important to see a doctor before the symptoms get worse. Only a doctor will be able to determine if a person has acid reflux and only a doctor will be able to prescribe medication.

Is Surgery An Effective Solution For Acid Reflux?

Those with acid reflux know that the problem is one that will stay with them for life. Caused by a lack of strength of the lower esophageal sphincter, acid reflux causes harmful fluids to rise from the stomach into the esophagus, causing corrosive damage due to the stomach acid found in the liquid.

The most common symptom of acid reflux is the agony of heartburn, but there are other health risks associated with it such as Barrett’s esophagus, erosive esophagitis and esophageal cancer.

There is light on the horizon, however. There’s a new surgical procedure that is starting to get some traction for dealing with acid reflux. It’s known as the Plicator procedure and only takes about twenty minutes to complete. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Here is a basic explanation of what happen during the procedure.

- The Plicator, a small electronic device, is place on the end of an endoscopy tube. Endoscopies are procedures wherein a tube gets lowered into the digestive tract through the mouth while the patient is sedated, but conscious.

- The Plicator travels through the digestive tract until it reaches the stomach. Once the Plicator is firmly in place in the stomach, it is maneuvered so that it can grab the tissue that is located in between the stomach and the esophagus. The Plicator then closes its arms, causing it to crimp the tissue. A single suture is placed to secure the fold that was made by the Plicator.

- This results in a tighter opening between the stomach and esophagus, helping the lower esophageal sphincter to maintain the passageway more easily.

Those who undergo this procedure usually don’t experience any unwanted side effects, and are often back to their normal activities the following day. Several studies have been done to measure the effectiveness of the procedure for eliminating heartburn.

These studies showed that prescription heartburn medications could be eliminated in 70% of the patients who had the procedure done. Plus, 80% of the patients who had the procedure done showed improvements in their reflux symptoms afterwards.

The effects of the surgery are seen very quickly. Within several days following the procedure, most people were able to decrease their heartburn medication. Sore throats and abdominal pain occurred in some patients, but only lasted for a few days.
