However, there are times when an artist may wish to stretch themselves. In modern times prepared canvases can be costly especially for large sizes and unusual shapes and sizes are almost impossible to locate. There is an easier way to make them yourself. Originally, the canvas used for paintings came from sail cloth. In modern times sails are manufacturedfrom synthetic materials. Synthetic materials should be avoided for paintings as they tend to provide poor adhesion. But not to worry, most fabric supplies still stock cotton canvas in many grades appropriatefor painting. The grade of cotton canvas used will determinethe surface finish.

There are three basic grades available in the market. The three grades are - course, medium and fine. Let’s start with the course grade. The course grade is made from the heaviest yarn and will give the grainy appearance to finish surface. The medium grade will give a slightly grainy appearance and the fine grade with give a smooth finish. The most popular used for paintings especially oils and acrylics is medium grade. Cotton calico cloth can also be used; this yields a very fine weave and the smoothest of all the finishes. This is particularly advantageous if a high gloss is desired.

Because of the absorptive capacity of canvas, proper sealing must be ensured to ensure a good painting surface.This is achieved by employingat least 2 coasts of primer.

This process not only seals the surface but also tightens the tension of the canvas once the primer is dry. Keep the canvas on a flat horizontal surface when applying the primer to ensure and even coating and allow drying thoroughly between coatings.

Your next step? Apply the primer evenly on the paining surface, the edges and the rear of the stretcher. This bonds the masking tape the canvas edges to the stretcher frame and produces a neat finish.

The completedpainting should have a clean smooth finish. If small lumps show up these are usually due to imperfection in the canvas weave and will not hamper with the final paining. If desired, lumps can be removed with fine sandpaper between primer coats. If you are a new canvas painter, you can try it out too.

Chinese Theater Arts
Chinese theater arts involve primarily four skills. They are voice, dance, song and acrobats. Dancing is done along with acting and combat is a part of the acrobats. In all these the basic emphasis is on the beauty of the movement and the actors are supposed to master all four of them as they are the part and parcel of the Chinese theater arts. The Tang Dynasty witnessed the rise in shadow puppetry. It reached such great heights that an acting school named The Pear Garden was started by Ming Huang which produced musical drama and the actors of this school were known as The Children of the Pear Garden. There two subcategories of shadow puppetry, Cantonese and Pekingese. The difference was in the making of the puppet. The Cantonese puppets were larger with the characters having symbolic colors according to the roles they are depicting. They were made out of thick leather and the rods were attached perpendicular to the head of the puppet. The Pekingese puppets were more delicate and small and brightly colored. They were made out of thin and translucent leather and the rods were attached to the neck of the puppet which were bent at ninety degree and ran parallel to the body of the puppet. The storyline was usually same for both Cantonese and Pekingese. The Chinese puppeteers believed in an age-old superstition that the puppets come alive at night if the head of the puppet was left intact with the body. So the head and the body were detached and stored in two different boxes.

Arts
The shows are usually being presented on rectangular platforms with the audience surrounding it from three sides. Shoujiu is an embellished curtain which divides the curtain into two. The stage is sparsely decorated with more emphasis on the actors who wear bright clothes and makeup and thus less number of props are used during the performance. The attire differs according to the role being played. King and his family wear yellow costumes where as a highly ranked warrior wears a purple outfit. Mang or python robe is the name given to this class of costumes. A character of high rank wears red garment with rich embellishments often in the shape of a dragon and other characters of lower rank wear blue robe. A young character wears white clothes, an older personality wears white, olive or brown and the rest of the supporting actors wear black robes.

Read your old diaries.  Love, and all the positive and negative aspects of it, are a good place to start.  Just thinking back among your past relationships can give you a year’s worth of material.

Look at your life.  Just take a look around at your present circumstances.  “I’ve Seen Better Days” is a song that parodies the singer’s daily life.  The music isn’t memorable, but the lyrics ring true to many people of that age group.

Music first, lyrics later.  Another method taken from the hip hop world is to come up with the music before writing the lyrics.  Many develop their beats, or the track that will loop under the rhymes, before writing a single word.  They then freestyle without having anything written down to develop the lyrics.

Freewrite.  Grab a pen and paper, and spend 10 minutes writing whatever comes to mind.  Don’t worry about spelling and grammar or if it makes sense, just keep writing.  After your 10 minutes are up, look it over and see if you have some ideas you can expand upon to make a song out of.
